Revenge Porn Criminalized in Oregon!

Filed at the behest of the Attorney General of Oregon, Senate Bill 188 proposes to criminalize revenge porn which is turning into a growing concern. The proposed law is intended to punish people who use and distribute intimate pictures and videos of another individual with the intention to harass and intimidate.

This type of media often finds its way to social networking sites or pornographic portals dedicated to what is billed as revenge porn. The crime is so rampant that 25 other states have already enacted or have proposed to enact laws that would address the transgression; Oregon would be one more in that list.

If the bill is cleared, for first time offenders, the crime would be deemed a misdemeanor while repeat offenders will have to face felony charges. The plight of one Ms. Gordon who was the victim of such malicious intent and crime spurred the senate into action. She recounted her tale of horror when a work supervisor distributed objectionable images of her, and the Salem police expressed their lack of jurisdiction to pull up the perpetrator.

The strong laws of Oregon that protect the right to free speech and expression could prove to be an impediment but unlike in other states, the proposed bill is narrow enough to ensure that only those who distribute such images with the intent to harm or harass will be punished.
